Microsoft Lumia 640XL Review

The Good: The phone's 5.7-inch screen is bright and the colors are rich. We were impressed by the rear camera. Long lasting battery life.

The Bad: The Lumia 640XL's screen resolution is a bit disappointing at 720p. The processor could be faster. The plastic chassis doesn't feel that great compared to other phones in its price range, but it's not too bad.

The Verdict: The Microsoft Lumia 640XL feels like a flagship smartphone at times, but its not-so-impressive build quality and low-resolution display remind us that it's still just another affordable phone and nothing more.

Design and Build Quality

While the Lumia 640XL doesn't feel as premium as certain smartphones that have all-metal or glass backs, it's a decently constructed device, despite the plastic build. The back pops off to reveal the access to the microSD and SIM slots. This also means you can swap the back if you feel like it. The matte finish on the casing gets extra points for not collecting any fingerprints.

Software and User Experience

As you might have guessed it, the Microsoft Lumia 640XL runs on Windows Phone 8.1, and it offers a smooth experience, especially when it comes to basic use. However, the phone is somewhat slow when it comes to booting up.

Camera

The 640XL has a 13MP rear camera with German-made Zeiss optics that will surely blow you away. Even inexperienced photographers are able to get some pleasing shots. Photos come out beautiful and the colors pop. Low light photos are somewhat worse, but this is to be expected. The phone has a 5MP front-facing camera as well, which is great for taking selfies.

Technical Specifications:

  • Display: 5.7 inches (1280x720 pixels)
  • Processor: 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400
  • Memory: 1GB
  • Storage: 8GB (expandable via microSD)
  • Camera: 13MP
  • Battery: 3,000mAh
  • OS:    Windows Phone 8.1
  • Dimensions: 157.9 x 81.5 x 9 mm (6.22 x 3.21 x 0.35 in)

Conclusion

The battery life on this phone is truly amazing, thanks to the combination of a low-resolution display, non-demanding processor, and a relatively large 3,000 mAh battery. Another standout features is the phone's camera, which produces rich and beautiful photos. The processor could be better, but it can handle basic things without too much effort.
