The Good: Packing a 17 inch screen at 1600x900 resolution is the greats trump card the Intel has. No other laptops in our comparison possess this type of theatrical power. On top of that, the 2.4 GHz Core i3 dual core is trusted processor.
The Bad: The Intel HD graphics 4600 GPU is not known for its great gaming performance. Combine this with a high resolution screen and trouble could arise. Also, the GPU will limit the amount of games you can play on this machine.
The Verdict: Being the largest of the gamin laptops under 600 dollars in our comparison, it has its natural advantages. Sadly, the graphics card on this machine is sub-optimal and will limit the gaming experience on some games. Get the HP if you’re a fan of Intel chips or the HP brand.
The HP Pavilion 17-e140us is not only a good gaming laptop under 600 dollars, it is also a good looking laptop under 600 dollars. Coming in a sleek HP exterior while being recently discounted from its original list price of close to 1000 dollars, this is a bargain. It is very interesting how the engineers at HP have been able to pack so much technology in combination with a Windows 8 64-bit version into such an attractive package at this price.
The first thing we noticed in our HP Pavilion 17-e140us review, was the beautiful 17.3 inch LED screen with a 1600x900 near full HD resolution. What a beauty. Very few cheap gaming laptops under 600 can boast about such a large screen while still containing the technical goodies the HP possesses.
Speaking of technical goodies, the HP comes jam packed quality material. Being powered by the 4th generation dual core i3 from Intel, clocked at 2.4 GHz, this machine has the brand Intel at its side. Sometimes people are afraid that their game requires a quad core system. Don’t worry about this, even the most modern games aren’t optimised to make full use of a quad core processor. yet. This might change towards the near future though.
As spoken about in the buying guide, it is not the processor or CPU that creates good gaming laptops under 600 dollars. It’s the graphics card or GPU that separates the average systems from the great systems. And the integrated Intel HD 4600 GPU, becoming a regular these days in many Haswell-architected dual core laptops, is not one of the favourites at AlwaysReview. Although an upgrade from the 4000, it still limits the amount of game you’ll be able to play.
The large screen size of the HP Pavilion 17-e140us definitely has its charm. And the dual core Intel processor is known to be a quality chip able of several years of capable performance. Sadly however, the graphics card in the HP, the integrated Intel HD 4600 GPU, is not known for its gaming potential. Most likely, this will become the bottleneck in your gaming experience. We would recommend a different laptop.
