Pentax K-S2 Review

The Good: The image quality is excellent, and the articulating screen is very useful and great for difficult compositions. Unlike most cameras in its price range, Pentax K-S2 is weather sealed.

The Bad: The camera is very slow to startup for a DSLR. Poor battery life. The built in Wi-Fi is very slow.

The Verdict: If you're looking for a decent entry level DSLR camera that isn't made by Canon or Nikon, there aren't many choices out there, but Pentax K-S2 is one of them. The camera is weather sealed, which suggests it's aimed at photography enthusiasts rather than beginners, but the price suggests otherwise. Then again, image quality wise, it lacks a bit compared to modern offerings from Canon and Nikon, especially in low light situations.

Features

Pentax K-S2's performance is good in a lot of scenarios, especially when it comes to basic family, pets and travel photography. Thanks to the fact that its weather sealed, you won't have to worry if it suddenly starts raining and you forget to cover up your camera. The autofocus looks good on paper, but isn't very impressive in real life tests. Its performance is a bit frustrating. The image quality is good and sharp up through ISO 1600. Once you pass this point, the quality starts to deteriorate and it gets really bad after ISO 6400.

Build Quality

The camera's build quality for the price is pretty amazing. Like we mentioned before, the fact that it's weather sealed at this price point really sets it apart. The camera's grip isn't as deep as some of the other cameras on the market, but it will work just fine for most people. There's a tiny recess for your middle finger to rest nicely, as well as a small resting place for your thumb around the back. All of this helps Pentax K-S2 sit nicely in your hand.

Technical Specifications:

  • 20.1MP APS-C CMOS sensor
  • PRIME M II image processing engine
  • 3.0" LCD monitor
  • Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps
  • 11-point AF sensor; 9 cross-type
  • ISO 51200
  • 5.5 fps shooting
  • Shake reduction

  • Built-In Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC

Conclusion

We'll keep it very simple when it comes to Pentax K-S2. If you're looking for a solid entry level DSLR camera that has weather sealing, then this is the way to go.
