LG Nexus 5X Review

The Good: The LG Nexus 5X offers amazing performance, takes great photos, and has a responsive fingerprint sensor. Everything is packed in a lightweight chassis and the phone is surprisingly affordable.

The Bad: Battery life could be better. The front-facing speaker sounds pretty bad.

The Verdict: If you're looking for a small, lightweight, yet powerful smartphone that won't break the bank, Nexus 5X is a great choice.

Design and Build Quality

The Nexus 5X isn't a particularly good-looking phone. It looks a little bit cheap and feels like a toy, despite being quite powerful. The entire phone is built out of plastic, but that isn't very surprising in this price range. The 5.2-inch 1080p screen is pretty amazing. It's great for watching movies and playing games, just make sure to plug in your earphones, because the front-facing speakers are terrible.

Software and User Experience

The LG Nexus 5X comes with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and since LG made this phone for Google (it's sold under the name Google Nexus 5X as well), the smartphone offers a pure Android experience. The Nexus 5X's processor with the combination of the even more optimized OS delivers really smooth performance.

Camera

The 12.3-megapixel rear camera takes some pretty awesome photos. It also has laser autofocus, which proves to be helpful in a lot of situations, because it locks onto targets quickly. On top of that, the Nexus 5X records 4K video at 30 frames per seconds, and has slow motion capabilities as well — it can capture footage at 120 frames per second (at lower resolutions, of course).

Technical Specifications:

  • Display: 5.2 inches (1920x1080 pixels)
  • Processor: 1.8 GHz six-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Storage: 16GB/32GB (non-expandable)
  • Camera: 12.3MP + 4K video recording
  • Battery: 2,700mAh
  • OS:    Android OS, 6.0 (Marshmallow)
  • Dimensions: 147 x 72.6 x 7.9 mm (5.79 x 2.86 x 0.31 in)

Conclusion

It's pretty amazing what LG managed to include in this sub-$400 phone. The Nexus 5X offers amazing performance, partially thanks to it's amazing six-core processor and in part thanks to the fact that it comes with stock Android, which means you won't get a bunch of bloatware (preloaded apps), which slow down your device. Pair this with its decent camera, great fingerprint scanner and pretty good display, and you've got a great device at an affordable price
